Ed Foster gave a presentation entitled “The NTU Student Dashboard: Implementing a Whole Institution Learning Analytics Platform to Improve Student Engagement”. The presentation outlined core findings about the relationship between engagement measured in the Dashboard, the developmental journey and the challenges faced by the ABLE project to improving student engagement and outcomes.

The Learning Analytics & Knowledge conference (LAK16) took place at the University of Edinburgh (24th – 29th April 2016). The conference theme was “Enhancing Impact: Convergence of Communities for Grounding, Implementation and Validation”. (http://lak16.solaresearch.org/).

LAK 2017 – 7th International Conference on Learning Analytics & Knowledge

The LAK17 conference is organised by the Society for Learning Analytics Research (SOLAR) and will be hosted by Simon Fraser University (SFU), Canada’s leading community-engaged research university. Consolidating the experience from previous LAK conferences, LAK 2017 extends invitations to researchers, practitioners, administrators, government and industry professionals interested in the field of learning analytics and related disciplines. This annual conference provides a forum to address critical issues and challenges confronting the education sector today. The success of LAK arises from its transdisciplinary nature which creates a unique intersection of cutting-edge learning technologies, educational research and practice, and data science.

European First Year Experience (EFYE)

Maartje van den Bogaard, Tinne De Laet, Rebecca Edwards and Sarah Lawther conducted a pre-conference session entitled “Using learning analytics to improve student retention” alongside Tom Broos from KU Leuven and Jan-Paul van Staalduinen from TU Delft. The workshop explored key issues about using learning analytics to improve student outcomes.

Ed Foster co-ran a pre-conference session entitled “The FYE body of work is arguably 117 years old, how up to date are you?” with Diane Nutt, international chair of the EFYE. The workshop covered a wide range of issues including the use of learning analytics.

The EFYE network kindly agreed to allow us to use the annual conference as a key opportunity to disseminate research findings.

The Implications and Opportunities of Learning Analytics for European Educational Policy

National Multiplier Event 2015

The opening plenary focused on the challenges facing universities using data to lead change. Ed Foster spoke about the NTU Student Dashboard and the challenges of using learning analytics in both the opening plenary and parallel workshop. Sarah Lawther led discussions on the use of data for success for all and other members of the Dashboard team dealt with issues such as the ethical implications of using learning analytics.
